The Watts Towers or Nuestro Pueblo in the Watts district of Los Angeles, California, is a collection of 17 interconnected structures, two of which reach heights of over 99 feet (30 m). The Towers were built by Italian immigrant construction worker Sabato ("Sam" or "Simon") Rodia in his spare time over a period of 33 years, from 1921 to 1954. The work is a superb example of non-traditional vernacular architecture.

Beautiful Town Architecture, Oia, Greece
Oia is a community on the island of Thera, Santorini, in the Cyclades, Greece. Population 1,230 (2001). Along the cliff of Oia, houses have been delved into the porous volcanic rock (left over from a large volcanic explosion many years ago that sunk the center of the island). Parts of these houses are visible and the scenery that results from it is generally perceived as being typically Greek. The town is noted for its picturesque architecture, unique for its blend of relatively large (for the town's space) medieval Venetian houses (dubbed "kapetanea" gr: "καπετανέα" -- as they belonged to the captains) with small incave village homes, called "yposkafa" (gr: "υπόσκαφα", caved-in) which were the housing form of the rest of the town's population. This is a reminiscent of the age of Venetian rule over the island. Other attributes of this era are the large Catholic population as well as the medieval fortifications to protect from pirates. To this day laws protect the natural and architectural beauty of the town from modern manifestations, such as public electrical wires. Oia remains one of the foremost tourist attractions of the Aegean Sea. The famous Oia sunset, considered by many as one of the most beautiful in the world, keeps tourists flocking down to the castle, waiting for the moment when the sun slips down on the calm sea of the caldera. Tourists are often told that the fishing docks at Oia are the oldest continually used docks in the world, supposedly being in service for 3000 years. While an interesting bit of tourist trivia, no evidence is supplied to validate the claim. In 2004, it was used for the location of a few scenes in the movie Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants.

The DZ Bank building on Pariser Platz by Frank Gehry
The DZ Bank building on Pariser Platz, designed by the American architect Frank Gehry, is one of Berlin's most spectacular new office buildings.
This being, first and foremost, a bank, the facade - a cascading mixture of sand-coloured stone and swooning glass, graced by massive chrome and glass doors - subtly disguises what lies beyond. The interior courtyard of the building shows Gehry's trademark: a massive, titanium, morphing form. In this case a towering, curvaceous fish that houses a central conference space captures motion and movement in the building.

The Rock Church by Persecuted Christians
Goreme, an important Christian centre in the early years of the Middle Ages, was a bishopric administered by Mokissos near Aksaray in the 11th and 13th centuries. Despite the vast number of monasteries, churches and chapels in the vicinity of Goreme, there are not many inscriptions bearing dates. For this reason, these religious buildings are mainly dated according to the iconography or architectural features.
It is believed that Goreme and its surroundings were used as a necropolis by the people of Vanessa (Avanos) in the Roman Periods. Both the monumental twin pillared Roman tomb hollowed out into a fairy chimney in the centre of Goreme and the presence of numerous tombs in the vicinity support that idea.
Goreme served as a physical and an intellectual oasis for the people who have lived here. Hittites found refuge from the Phrygian invaders while early Christian monks sought its isolation in a remote corner of the kingdom during the 2nd century Roman persecutions and were later sheltered from the Arab invasions in the 7th and 8th centuries.
The Cappadocia valley became an important center of monasticism that lasted from the 4th to the 14th centuries. There are an estimated 150 churches and several monasteries in the canyon between the villages of Ihlara and Selime.

Old Architecture Colosseo, The Coliseum
The Coliseum was built of brick and covered with travertine in a valley between the hills Palatine, Celio and Esquilino, after draining a small lake that Nero used for the Domus Aurea.
The building of four storeys, with a height of 48.50 metres and an extension elliptical covering an area of approximately 19000 square meters, measuring axis greater than 188m and 156m less. The first floor is high with 10.50m semi Doric style, the second highest of about two metres is formed by Ionic columns, the third high 11.60m has Corinthian columns while the fourth wall with small square windows. At this level there are also holes required to support the beams of velario that, in ancient times, was used to protect spectators from the sun flying.
The Coliseum is made up of areas that we could access through ladders and tunnels in which, during the shows, vendors were placed chickpeas, beverages and pillows. Along the sidelines, including places for the senators and members of the court was built by order of the stage of the emperor Augustus ( "pulvinar"). It was probably entitled to access through an underground corridor known as passage of Commodus, the fact that, in a passage of the "Roman History", Dione Cassius tells how the emperor Commodus had suffered an attack in what was described as "a dark ways".
The elliptical arena, Flavian Amphitheater, which measures along the approximately 77m to 46, was formed by a wooden desk covered with sand. To access existed two inputs: west "Gateway Triumphalis", which entered the gladiators or animals, and to the east "Gateway Libitinensis", which were taken away the lifeless bodies of fighters (Labitinia Goddess of Death) .
Under the arena of the Coliseum extended several corridors and environments destined to host the gladiators and wild beasts that could be brought to centre stage by forklifts and ramps. Along the edges paved the arena there was a porch to two orders of which there were received around the remains while running at a pavement with marble which was set on the velarium. Outside the building you can see inscriptions that recall the work of consolidating the amphitheatre and especially the prohibition of Pope Benedict XIV to pillage the monument.

Amazing Architecture Structure, The Guggeinheim Museum
Spending 4 days in Bilbao was wonderful. The weather, the city, the landscape, the culture and the street life where all amazing.
Bilbao is the in the "unkown" and rarely visited northern part of spain. This part of Spain has alot to offer. In contrast to other parts of Spain its green and lush with green hills everywhere you look.
The city has been transformed from a heavy industrial city to clean modern city and a big part of that process was building the Guggeinheim museum.
This amazing structure is the design of Frank Gehry. In my opinion the museum it self is much more interesting than the art it exhibits. Maybe its because you cant photograph the arts.

Red Hot Charming Plovdiv (Bulgaria`s most interesting photo on flickr!!!)

Red Hot Charming Plovdiv (Bulgaria`s most interesting photo on flickr), originally uploaded by Emilofero.
Plovdiv, Bulgaria`s second largest city.
It`s one of the oldest still living European cities - contemporary to Troy (Turkey), older than Rome (Italy) and Athens (Greece). It keeps thousands monuments from prehistoric times - 8 000 years ago, from the time when Alexander the Great called it Philipopolis - in memory of his father Philip - 4 c.B.C., from the days it was capital of the Thracian kingdom - till 45 A.D.
Roman theater, stadium, odeon, mosaics, Renaissance houses and islamic, orthodox, catholic and Jewish temples adorn the city, which is geological, botanical, archaeological, historical and architectural reserve. Many travelers, for example Evliya Cheleby from the 17 c. call it the most beautiful of all Balcan cities...
It is indeed!

Prague St. Vitus Cathedral
The Cathedral of St. Vitus had tremendous influence on the development of Late Gothic style characteristic for Central Europe. Members of Parler workshop, and indeed, the Parler clan (both of which were established at the building site of St. Vitus) designed numerous churches and buildings across Central Europe. More notable examples include Stephansdom cathedral in Vienna, Strasbourg Cathedral, Church of St. Marko in Zagreb and the Church of St. Barbara in Kutna Hora, also in Czech Republic. Regional Gothic styles of Slovenia, northern Croatia, Austria, Czech Republic, Poland and southern Germany were all heavily influenced by Parler design.
Of particular interest are Parler's net vaults. The Late Gothic of Central Europe is characterised by ornate and extraordinary vaulting, a practice which was started by Parler's development of his own vaulting system for the choir of St. Vitus cathedral. Another regional Gothic style also displays amazing ingenuity and ornamentation in the design of vaults, the Perpendicular Style of English Gothic. A question remains of what was influenced by what. Some British art and architecture historians suspected that Peter Parler might have travelled to England at some point in his life, studying the great English Gothic cathedrals, which then inspired his work on St Vitus. However, taking into account that the Perpendicular style and the use of truly extravagant vaults in English Gothic began at the very end of 14th century, it is also quite possible that it was St Vitus Cathedral of Prague that influenced the development of English Gothic.

Swaminarayan Akshardham Temple in New Delhi
The Swaminarayan Akshardham temple on the banks of the River Yamuna in Delhi was inaugurated by President APJ Abdul Kalam on November 6, 2005.
The sprawling Rs.200-crore pink sandstone cultural complex spread over 100 acres showcases the grandeur of Indian history, art, culture and values. Designed by architect Virendra Sompura and conceptualised by Pramukh Swami Maharaj, it took over 7,000 master craftsmen and thousands of volunteers from all over the world almost five years to complete this modern day marvel.
The main monument, depicting ancient Indian "vastu shastra" and architecture, is a masterpiece in pink sandstone and white marble that is 141 feet high, 316 feet wide and 370 feet long with 234 ornate pillars, over 20,000 sculptures and statues of deities, eleven 72-foot-high huge domes (mandapams) and decorative arches.
The monument stands on the shoulders of 148 huge elephants which are encircled by a double-storied colonnade that depicts tales from the epics.
The complex has exhibition halls, an Imax theatre and a musical fountain, surrounded by a garden, and is much more than a mere place of pilgrimage.
The temple complex is expected to become one of the major tourist attractions of Delhi. It will be thrown open to the public from November 8, from 12 noon to 6 p.m. The timings will be extended from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. from November 15.
For visitors, entry to the complex is free. However, for exhibition halls and theatres an entry fee of Rs.125 is to be paid and for children and senior citizens the charges are Rs.75.

Venetian Gothic style building by Colonel Clair Wilkins
Raised in memory of Sir Bartle Frere (Commissioner of Sind 1851-1859, this Venetian Gothic style building was designed by Colonel Clair Wilkins whose proposal was selected from 12 entries, in what was perhaps the first recorded architectural design competition for a public building in Sind. Completed in 1865 at a cost of Rs.1,80,000 out of which Rs. 22,500 was raised for the memorial through public donations, the building was officially inaugurated by Commissioner Mansfield on 10th Oct. 1865. The gardens around the building were added in 1887-88 by Mr. Benjamin Flinch. Originally the statues of Queen Victoria and King Edward (both of which have now been removed), adorned the garden. The upper floor of this two storied yellowish Karachi limestone building, consists of a 70 ft x 24 ft hall and an orchestral gallery. In yesteryears this building was the hub of Karachi’s socio-cultural activities and also served as a Town Hall with regular public meetings, concerts and theatrical performances. The ground floor is now occupied by the Liaquat Municipal Library.

Khumbhalgarh, Rajasthan by Maharana Khumbha
Located to the south of Jaipur and about 105Km from Udaipur is Kumbhalgarh. The city is cradled in the cluster of thirteen mountain peaks of the Aravalli ranges and the formidable medieval citadel-Kumbhalgarh stands a wary sentinel to the past glory.
Kumbhalgarh is famous for the Kumbhalgarh Fort which was built and designed by Maharana Kumbha in the 15th century AD and is the second principal fort after Chittorgarh.
Under Rana Kumbha's rule the kingdom of Mewar, which extended from Ranthambore to Gwalior, was defended by 84 fortresses. 32 of these fortresses were built and designed by Rana Kumbha and the most famous was the Kumbhalgarh Fort . Kumbhalgarh stands on the site of an ancient citadel dating back to the 2nd century AD belonging to a Jain descendant of India's Mauryan Emperors.
Kumbhalgarh, hold a heroic past having sheltered the heir of Mewar throne in times of danger. It was here that the baby prince of Mewar was hidden from an assassin. It is an isolated and fascinating place, built by Maharana Khumbha in the 15th century. Because of its inaccessibility - at1100m on top of the Aravalli Range - it was taken only once in history. Even then, it took the combined armies of the Mughal emperor Akbar, and of Amber and Marwar to breach its defenses.
The thick walls of this mighty fort stretch some 36km and are wide enough for eight horses to ride abreast. They enclose many temples, palaces, gardens and water storage facilities. The fort was renovated in the 19th century by Maharana Fateh Singh. It is worth taking a leisurely walk in the large compound, which has some interesting ruins and is very peaceful.

City of Arts and Sciences, Calatrava
Santiago Calatrava was born in Valencia, Spain in 1951. He graduated from the Institute of Architecture in Valencia and from the Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich. Calatrava opened his own architecture and engineering office in Zurich.
As both an architect and an engineer, Calatrava easily identifies with both disciplines. He often creates innovative works that depend on a firm grasp of both the creative and structural aspects of design. His skills as an engineer allow him to create sculptural surfaces and unusual spaces.
He was selected to design a new train and subway station at the World Trade Center site in New York. Calling Calatrava's structures ‘open and organic’, The New York Times said that the new terminal will evoke the kind of uplifting spirituality that is needed on Ground Zero.
Some of Santiago Calatrava best works: Milwaukee Art Museum (USA), Athens Olympic Sports Complex (Greece), Alamillo bridge (Sevilla, Spain), Turning Torso (Sweden), Calatrava tower & Bac de Roda bridge (Barcelona).

Funny Shape Building
Perhaps the most fundamental concept is that the mind, particularly the human mind, is programmed to seek meaning and significance in all sensory information sent to it. This, no doubt, is linked with the instinct for survival, for eons ago the eye, the ear and the mind learned to interpret a change in color in the glass or the snap of a twig as indications of a predator on the prowl. The result, as far removed from our primeval origins as we believe ourselves to be, is that the mind seeks to place all information fed into it info a meaningful pattern. The mind does not recognize that incoming data mean nothing. Even purely random visual or aural phenomena are given a preliminary interpretation by the mind on the basis of what evaluative information it already has stored away. Hence, what we perceive is based on what we already know.

Chicago - Marina City
The size of spaces may result from a variety of considerations including the limitations posed by the finances and materials available for construction and, in a temperate climate, the costs involved in heating large as opposed to small spaces. 'Scale' is the term we use to discuss the size of the space relative to the size of something else. A space may be physically large or small but we can only judge this by making comparisons with the number of people who use the space, the furnishings and objects that are to be contained within it, neighbouring spaces or our expectations. Small rooms in a terraced house may suggest snug comfort, but if a whole family had to live in one small room, as many people did in the nineteenth century, then the space is overcrowded and uncomfortable. Today we would consider the scale painfully small. Spaces where lots of people congregate, a chapel, a sports hall, parliament or a factory, need to be large so that they can accommodate the numbers and the activity. We would call their scale large if, for example, the great height of their internal space was not just for reasons of acoustics, the provision of air and the need to reduce the sense of enclosure. The earlier example of a medieval cathedral illustrated that if it went beyond these requirements or our expectations it would evoke a feeling of awe, grandeur and monumentality.

Is this really part of Sir Norman's Opus?
This image is of the lobby to the Leslie L. Dan Pharmacy Building on the University of Toronto campus. This image captures what is best about the building. Moving through the building I wondered how involved Foster and Partners was in this project. The buildings that come out of that office are known for their exquisite details. At their best a Foster's project blurs the line between architecture and industrial design. This project is not like that.
Comparing this building to the neighbouring Terrence Donnelly Centre for Cellular and Biomolecular Research design by Behnisch Architekten one questions how involved the respective "star" architects were in their projects. It would seem that Behnisch Architekten were far more involved in their project than Foster and Partners. Looking at the two buildings it is apparent that an international office who partners with a good local firm will produce a better project. Kudos to Architects Alliance for work on the Behnisch project.
