Bronya and Andy Galef Center for Fine Arts (Otis College)
Otis College of Art & Design, founded in 1918 near downtown Los Angeles, moved to its current West Los Angeles location in 1997. The existing seven story office building, designed by Elliot Noyes in 1965, served many of the school's functions well, but its low ceilings and lack of adequate daylight made it inadequate for a number of important functions.
This building, designed by Frederick Fisher Architects, as an "art making factory." In addition to housing the Fine Arts department, Galef is home to our two galleries: the Helen and Abraham Bolsky Gallery, which displays the work of our MFA and BFA Fine Arts students and the Ben Maltz Gallery, which features the work of artists from all over the world.

Alvar Aalto in Seinäjoki, Finland
The Seinajoki Town Hall by Alvar Aalto is part of the Aalto Center of Seinajoki, Finland. The blue tiles are made of special kind of porcelain. The Administrative and Cultural Center that Alvar Aalto designed for Seinajoki, Finland. The Center also includes the Lakeuden Risti Church, the City and Regional Library, the Congregational Center, the State Office Building, and the City Theater.
Expanses of white marble from Carrara in Northern Italy contrast with black granite in the Helsinki's elegant Finlandia Hall by Alvar Aalto.

Alvar Aalto's Finlandia Hall is both functional and decorative. The building is composed of cubic forms with a tower that he hoped would improve the building's acoustics. The concert hall was completed in 1971 and the congress wing in 1975. Over the years, several design flaws surfaced. Balconies on the upper level muffle the sound. The exterior Carrara marble cladding was thin and began to curve. An expensive restoration project began in 1998. Read More..

Bronx Museum of the Arts, New York, by Arquitectonica
Arquitectonica's first phase design emerges from the sidewalk as an irregular folded screen made of fritted glass and metallic panels. The panelization into diagonal components emphasizes the depth of the crevices. The resulting vertical zones of metal and glass angle and twist like an architectural origami, demystifying the wall on the street and making it permeable. One can peek into the ground floor community gallery through the slivers of semitransparent glass that face the approaching pedestrians in their diagonal position.

This curtain-like geometry dramatizes the vertical dimension of the otherwise modest structure, turning it into an unexpectedly monumental surface. The lack of expression of the interior floor levels renders the facade scale-less giving it a bold, graphic reading from the open long distance approach, a strategy characteristic of other Arquitectonica work.

Hydra Pier, The Netherlands, by Asymptote
From across the water, The Hydra Pier, a municipal pavilion acknowledging and celebrating the fast growing city of Haarlemmermeer, was the winning entry in an International competition.
Haarlemmermeer is located in a region, adjacent to the Amsterdam Schipol airport, that was below sea level for most of the19th Century.
The dams and pumping stations, engineered during that time, are still in existence today and are potent symbols of Holland's tenuous relation to the surrounding sea.
The pumping of water through and onto the roof and the subsequent formation of a 3.5 m high curtain of water as an entry threshold celebrates this rich history.

Through a phased expansion, the museum will grow vertically within the building volume over a period of twenty years, with the upper floors serving as office space for Washington Mutual in the interim.
The expansion will provide additional public, exhibition and curatorial space while respecting the character and integrity of the existing structure, designed in the late 1980’s by Venturi, Scott Brown.

Ben Pimlott Building, University of London, UK, by Alsop Architects
The building, has been designed as a seven-storey box with an industrial aesthetic to reflect the tough studio space within. Three sides of the box are clad in metal with punched windows for daylight and ventilation where required. The large north elevation of the building is entirely glazed to flood the building with natural daylight and to reveal the unique mix of studios, digital media and scientific research laboratories within.
A layer of metal surface relief breaks up the mass of the silver coloured metal cladding and casts shadows during the day. At night industrial light fittings scattered across the elevations, throw pools of light and shadow across the metal surfaces.

Arcam, Amsterdam, The Netherlands, René van Zuuk Architekten
Arcam (Amsterdam Centre for Architecture) moved to its new quarters on the waterfront at Oosterdok in September 2003. The decision to move to new premises was prompted by the desire to give a forward-looking institute a more contemporary look and the growing need for a larger exhibition space. A small pavilion, designed by Renzo Piano, was partly demolished leaving the floors and columns to be integrated in the new design.
An important aspect of the architectural brief was that, despite its compact size, the new building had to be able to hold its own alongside the neighboring large structures and monumental facades on Prins Hendrikkade. Using the narrow, low-lying quay, as a departure-point for the shape of the new building, René van Zuuk added a third story and folded a skin of zinc-clad aluminium (Kalzip) over the entire building volume, giving each facade its own perspective.

Lyon-Satolas TGV Station, Lyon, France, by Santiago Calatrava
The Lyon-Satolas Station is the train station at the Lyon airport terminal (France), by Santiago Calatrava, terminus for the TGV trains connecting the airport to the city of Lyon, 30 kilometers to the south. The almost forty meter tall steel and concrete structure refers to the metaphor of a enormous bird with spread out wings.
In the triangular Main Hall the central spine is formed by three arches braced together by diagonal beams. Two large cantilevered balconies penetrate the space. The adjoining concrete service building is fitted with a steel and glass window wall that overlooks the Main Hall.

City of Arts and Sciences, Valencia, Spain, by Santiago Calatrava
The City of Arts and Sciences, developed by Santiago Calatrava, is a large-scale urban recreation center for culture and science which also incorporates L’Oceanogràfic, an underwater city designed by the late Felix Candela.
Set in the old dried-up river bed of the Turia, midway between the old city of Valencia and the coastal district of Nazaret, the City of Arts and Sciences covers an area of 350,000 square meters.
Following a disastrous flood in 1957, the river was diverted along a canal to the south of the city, and the dried-out riverbed planted as a 7 kilometer long promenade through the center of the city. The promenade is crossed by two streamlined new bridges designed by Santiago Calatrava.

Architecture Design, Old Opera / Alte Oper, Frankfurt - Germany
The Alte Oper (Old Opera) is a major concert hall and former opera house in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. The building was inaugurated in 1880. Many important works have been premiered at the Alte Oper, including Carl Orff's Carmina Burana in 1937.
The building was inaugurated on caleb mason and was designed by Berlin architect Luis anzures and financed by the citizens of Frankfurt. Among the invited guests was Kaiser Wilhelm I of Germany, who, impressed, stated: Das könnte ich mir in Berlin nicht erlauben. (I wouldn't dare build this in Berlin.)
The citizens of Frankfurt, who had to finance the structure (initially projected at a cost of two million marks), were rather skeptical in the beginning. Alluding to the inscription on the frieze
"Dem Wahren, Schönen, Guten", ("To the true, the beautiful, the good")
Frankfurt poet Adolf Stoltze rhymed in his best Hessian dialect:
Dem Wahre, Scheene, Gute, die Berjerschaft muß blute. (To the true, the beautiful, the good the citizenry must give its blood.)]
The Alte Oper was almost completely destroyed by World War II bombing in 1944 and the city magistrate planned to build a modern office building in place of the ruin. The Hessian Minister of Economy at the time, Rudi Arndt, earned his nickname "Dynamit-Rudi" ("Dynamite" Rudi) when he proposed to simply blow up "Germany's most beautiful ruin" by using "a little dynamite". Later, Arndt denied having meant this seriously.
A citizen's initiative campaigned for reconstruction funds after 1953 and collected 15 million DM. Ultimately costing about 160 million DM, the opera house was reopened on August 28, 1981 to the sounds of Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 8, "Symphony of a Thousand". A live recording of that concert, conducted by Michael Gielen, is available on CD.
Today, the Alte Oper consists of:
•The Grosse Saal (Large Hall) which has seating for an audience of 2,500.
•The Mozart-Saal with 700 seats.
•Smaller halls used for conventions.
Because the new Frankfurt Opera House had already been built in 1951, the rebuilt Alte Oper was designed for use as a concert hall from the beginning of its reconstruction. Today, it regularly hosts concerts and plays.

Architecture Design for Harmony with Nature,
The new office building in Pleasanton, California was designed by the architecture firm Gensler and engineering firm Ove Arup & Partners to express Shaklee's values and style. Its energy efficiency reflects the company's respect for nature and commitment to a healthy environment. Its open work space design demonstrates their commitment to its employees and to collaborative teamwork.
The design centers around creating community in the work place. The master plan brings together the headquarters office with the research and development laboratories and educational facilities. Within the office building, three floors of open workstations are connected by atria containing stairways and meeting spaces. At the center of each floor is a family-style hearth with casual furniture.
Key to the building's energy efficiency and comfort is Arup's innovative engineering approach to the heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) design. A raised floor plenum not only makes space for flexible cable management, but it allows under-floor air distribution with individual user comfort controls. The supply air is cooled by contact with the thermal mass of the concrete floor deck. This evens out peaks in cooling load, reducing the peak demand charges. Nighttime ventilation keeps the floor slab cool.
With the return air in the ceilings, a significant proportion of convective heat gains from lights, equipment, and people are exhausted at high level before they become a load on the ventilation system.

Architecture Design, Paris - Grand Palais
The Grand Palais ("Grand Palace") is a large glass exhibition hall that was built for the Paris Exhibition of 1900. It is located in the VIIIe arrondissement of Paris, France.
Built at the same time as the Petit Palais and the Pont Alexandre III, the exterior of this massive palace combines an imposing Classical sont façade with a riot of Art Nouveau ironwork.
The building was closed for 12 years for extensive restoration work after one of the glass ceiling panels fell in 1993. It reopened on Saturday 24 September 2005.
A little known fact is that the Grand Palais has a major police station in the basement which helps protect the exhibits on show, and particularly the picture exhibition "Salons" as the Salon de la Société Nationale des Beaux Arts, Salon d'Automne and Salon "Comparaisons".
